Academic Credit
Most of our students are undergraduate and graduate students from universities in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia, and many of them receive academic credit for the course they complete with us. This page explains how it works.
What the Institute provides. Every course has a written syllabus with learning outcomes, a day-by-day schedule, the number of instructional hours, the assessment method and the grading scale (A to F). At the end of the course each student receives a Certificate of Completion stating the course, dates, instructional hours and final grade and, on request, a detailed Student Evaluation Report signed by the Course Director, with the breakdown of the grade, the attendance record and a narrative evaluation.
How to obtain credit. The Sanisera Archaeology Institute is an independent, non-profit institution and does not itself award credit. Credit is granted by your own university, usually as independent study, field school, internship or study-abroad credit through your department of Anthropology, Archaeology, Classics or History, or through your study-abroad office. The usual steps are:
-
Download the syllabus of the course you intend to take and show it to your academic advisor or department chair before you register.
- Ask for written pre-approval of the credit (number of credits and course code under which it will be transcribed). Most departments apply a scale of about 20 instructional hours per semester credit: 80 hours = 4 credits, 100 hours = 5, 120 hours = 6.
- Complete the course. We assess your work through your daily field journal, your recording sheets and a final presentation, together with your daily participation.
- Request your Certificate of Completion and Student Evaluation Report at the end of the course and submit them to your department. We will send the documents directly to your registrar or advisor if required.
Estimated academic credit by course
Estimate based on about 20 instructional hours per semester credit. The number of credits is decided by your home university.
| Course | Title | Instructional hours | Estimated semester credits |
|---|---|---|---|
| 006 | Dig in the Roman City of Sanisera | 101.5 | 4-5 |
| 008 | Digging Anthropology in the Sanisera Necropolis | 101.5 | 4-5 |

| 050 | GIS, AutoCAD and Digital Illustration | 50 | 2 |
| 053 | Bioarchaeology in the Crypt of San Mateo, Jerez | 80 | 4 |
| 060 | LIDAR, Photogrammetry, GIS and AI in the Pyrenees | 80 | 4 |

Combine two courses and double your credit
Many students take two courses in a row, for example two consecutive sessions in Menorca or a session in Menorca followed by the crypt of Jerez. Two courses usually add up to 8 semester credits or more in about a month:
| Combination (examples) | Instructional hours | Estimated semester credits |
|---|---|---|
| 006 + 008, or 008 + 018 (Menorca, two sessions in a row) | 203 | 8-10 |
| 010 + 018 (biological anthropology, then advanced osteology) | 203 | 8-10 |
| 006 + 053 (Roman city, then the crypt of Jerez) | 181.5 | 8-9 |
| 053 + 062 (crypt of Jerez, then zooarchaeology) | 164 | 8 |
School of Record. The Institute is working towards an agreement with an accredited US institution to act as School of Record and issue official transcripts for our courses. This page will be updated when the agreement is in place.
